Wildlife Observation Mapping Tool

Date: September 4, 2013 Category: ,

DTM worked with Wild Things Unlimited, a small wildlife research organization, to develop an on-line tool for reporting wildlife observations in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.  This tool is based largely on a similar tool created by Miistakis Institute in BC, Canada.  DTM modified the existing code to allow citizen scientists to enter personal observations.  The interface utilizes the Google Maps API to display locations, while custom PHP data entry forms allow entry of detailed information on the sighting.

This tool represents another example of using the appropriate technology for the effort.  This was a quick effort and the resulting code can be used to collect a variety of other types of information (bike accidents, potholes, graffiti, etc.) without having to deploy and maintain an expensive, proprietary, server-based web mapping platform such as ArcGIS Server.
